This recipe is a Hawaiian comfort dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties, rich gravy made with beef stock, soy sauce, and mushrooms, topped with a sunny-side-up egg, and served over Calrose rice. This hearty meal is easy to prepare and bursting with flavor, making it a perfect choice for a satisfying lunch or dinner.

Ingredients to serve:

This recipe was originally designed for 4 people. Amended serving sizes for 1, 2, 6, and 8 people are intended to serve as general guidance only. Cooking times may need to be adjusted to suit your amended serving size.

  • 1½ cup beef stock

  • 4 tsp shoyu (soy sauce)

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 tsp ketchup

  • 5 tsp cornstarch

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • ½ medium sized sweet onion

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms

  • 1½ lb ground beef

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1½ tsp seasoned salt

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 1 egg

  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

  • 2 cup Calrose Rice

  • Green onions (sliced)

Medium Grain/Calrose

White medium grain rice is a round, tender and succulent grain, allowing it to lock in moisture when it is cooked. This rice is often used in dishes that require a bit more creaminess, like paella or risotto. It is also ideal in your favourite Middle Eastern, Korean and Spanish dishes.

Method

  • Prepare Hinode Calrose Rice per package instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder and black pepper

  • Shape beef into medium sized patties and fry each side until done

  • Transfer to a plate and set aside

  • Prepare the Gravy

  • In a separate bowl, combine beef stock, shoyu (soy sauce), Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and cornstarch.

  • Melt butter over medium-high heat then add onions and mushrooms and fry for one to two minutes

  • Add gravy mixture to the pan, reduce heat and stir until it begins to thicken and simmer

  • Fry the Egg

  • Melt butter in frying pan and add egg into the pan and season with salt and pepper to taste

  • Cook 3-4 minutes until whites are set

  • Assemble:

  • Scoop fluffed rice onto a plate or shallow bowl

  • Place one hamburger patty on top of the rice and drizzle with gravy

  • Top with sunny side up egg and garnish with green onions
